Pembroke House Development Work

Welcome to St Christopher's Church

The Church of St Christopher’s, Walworth is a joyful and passionate place that sits within the Open Catholic tradition of the Church of England. We love the Bible, we love the Lord Jesus, we love to sing and we try to love each other! We also love parties. We celebrate with aplomb and significant volume and rather a lot of food.

St Christopher’s has grown out of Pembroke College Cambridge Mission, which was established in 1885, but it has only been a parish in its own right since 1995. That gives it a certain un-stuffy freedom and freshness. We are proud to embrace people from many different countries, most of whom live locally. Some used to live nearby and now commute in on Sundays.

Our building is warm, dry, light and fully accessible for people in wheelchairs. Because the nice people at Pembroke House maintain the building for us, we can focus on fun things like deepening our faith and understanding it better. We run a series of Bible Studies and nurture courses, and we have a thriving Men’s Group that meets monthly, and a well-attended Mother’s Union. This year we will enjoy two Quiet Days and a Parish Retreat.

Do come and visit us – we’re a friendly lot!

New Vicar for St Christopher's!

David EvansWe are very pleased to announce that Father David Evans has been appointed as the next Vicar of St Christopher's, Walworth and Warden of Pembroke House. Father David is currently Assistant Curate in the parish of St John at Hackney in the Diocese of London.

In a statement, Father David said: "I’m enormously excited about starting work at St Christopher’s and Pembroke House. So many people have put so much time, care and money into making the place what it is today and now the task is to use our fabulous resources to make even more of a difference to the lives of those we seek to serve. I pray that St Christopher’s will continue to grow in depth, in passion and in numbers, and that Pembroke House will bubble with welcome, healing, creativity and community-building."

Please pray for Father David as he prepares to come to St Christopher's and Pembroke House.

About St Christopher's

ChurchSt Christopher's (Walworth) is part of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark in the Church of England.

The tradition of the parish is catholic and open, and our worship expresses the culture and experience of the people that come together, particularly in the use of music and ritual. Regular social events include English, Nigerian, Ghanaian, Caribbean, and Polish food. The church leadership reflects the variety in the congregation and wider neighbourhood, and seeks to welcome all, wherever they are on their journey.

The mix of people in church on a Sunday morning reflects the diversity of the local community. There is a wide range of ages (from newborns to people in their late eighties); there is a thriving Junior Church which retains the commitment of teenagers; and there are also opportunities for young people to be involved in music for the liturgy and serving.

The Church Council has passed the Inclusive Church motion to work for the full representation of people in all aspects of Church life, irrespective of their sex, race or sexual orientation.

St Christopher's Church is proud to be a member of South London Citizens along with Pembroke House, working for justice and quality of life for London's citizens along with churches, schools, mosques and other organizations across south London.

For further information, and for baptisms, naming ceremonies, weddings, home blessings, funerals and the sacrament of confession, contact the parish clergy.
