Pembroke House Development Work

Pembroke House Development Campaign

CompletedPembroke House is pleased to announce the completion of the major renovation work begun in February 2009! A colourful Open Day launched the new building at the beginning of October with the generous support of Aylesbury NDC. Pembroke House project work has now begun in the new building.

Pembroke House was awarded a Big Lottery Fund grant of £500,000 in June 2008, and a grant from Aylesbury New Deal for Communities (‘Creation’) of £586,000 in November 2008. This tremendous investment, with existing funds of £450,000 from a variety of trusts, and fundraising by local people and Pembroke College alumni, meant the capital works were able to start in February 2009.

Building Improvements

The £1.5m project sees the renovation and restructuring of the interior of our building, making it fully accessible to all users.  The improvements to the building will:

  • Create a single office space for all staff, freeing up space for work with local people.
  • Boost the square footage of meeting space to create four new meeting rooms.
  • Provide a unified reception/welcome area with ramp access to the street.
  • Provide access to all areas for all people.
  • Provide additional kitchen facilities sufficient to prepare and cook a meal for 100 people.
  • Provide a sprung floor, appropriate for dance and other physical activity.
  • Provide additional toilet facilities, catering for disabled users.
  • Open up blocked-in window space to increase natural light into dark areas.
  • Install a new lift.
  • Install a new boiler.
  • Clean brickwork and remove graffiti.

Building workThese improvements will also allow for longer opening hours, seven days a week. We now anticipate an increase in the numbers of users from current levels of 400 growing to over 1100 per week over the coming years.

Benefits for local people

Local people will benefit from:

  • New educational work in the Youth Centre, especially in the area of criminal justice.
  • New services for the over 50s, including a lunch club, a film club, exercise and dance classes
  • New drop-in services for local residents, including parents with young children
  • Free IT services for our users, many of whom do not have access to computers
  • New interfaith work, particularly bringing together Muslims and Christians, encouraging cohesion and inclusion
  • Enhanced work on our site with the expressive arts, including dance and music
  • New professional catering facilities, permitting training, healthy eating workshops and lunch clubs with a suitably qualified cook
  • A bookable community space for new groups and individuals
  • We look forward to working more closely with Aylesbury NDC (‘Creation’), in providing facilities for Aylesbury area residents
